Society is functioning and is intertwined with the legal aspects. Lawyers play an important role in the justice administration system. For every crime that is committed, there should be justice. The law of the land is to protect every individual and group in society and to secure all its citizen’s justice, liberty of thoughts, and equality of opportunities. The pillars of the legal system can be understood as lawmakers, law protectors, the people (which includes the accused and the victim). How can you become a lawyer?

There are various courses enumerated to make you a master in the field of law by giving a bachelor’s in law degree (LL. B). Typically, it can be divided into two types: One is a three-year course that can be pursued by an individual after completing graduation, and the other being a five-year integrated course that can be pursued after the completion of Senior-Secondary school. After having an LL.B. degree, a person can pursue a master’s degree (LL.M.) and opt for a specialization in their choice of subjects.

Various exams to become a lawyer

There are various exams that are conducted to grant admissions to law schools like CLAT (Common Law Admission Test), SET (Symbiosis Entrance Test), LSAT (Law School Admission Test), etc. All the students who have or are graduating after the 2009-10 academic year have to compulsorily clear the exam of the bar council in order to practice in India.

Difference between lawyer and advocate

The word lawyer can be used to refer to any person who has or is still pursuing the course of the law i.e. the person is not yet eligible for fighting the case on behalf of the clients. However, an advocate, in other words, is a lawyer who exercises the right of the audience and argues a case for a client in legal proceedings.

An advocate may be a lawyer, but a lawyer need not be an advocate.  The term lawyer is used with a similar meaning of advocate in India, however, the official word is an advocate as per the Advocates Act, 1961.

What Exactly Does An Advocate Do?

Lawyers are also referred to as attorneys who are known for their excellent argumentation and status so as to protect the law and give advice in all matters that require order. There are different types of law namely civil, criminal, matrimonial, patent law, etc. If you think of being a lawyer, you should possess the spirit of competitiveness and have the power of convincing the judge while arguing a case and the client to rely upon you for the best result.

There are various types of work that are done by lawyers: lawyers, advisors, and counselors. They advise the clients based on their legal knowledge which requires high expertise. A lawyer can have a wide range of clients like individuals, companies or organizations, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations.

Working profile of the lawyer

Lawyers represent their clients, present evidence in the court of law for the defense, and also inform their clients about the rights and obligations which every legal entity has, statutorily. They also help the client with legal documents like contracts, wills, promissory notes, etc. A lawyer in order to help the client win the case is expected to conduct extensive research, stay updated with the recent judgments. Some other works include interpret the legal provisions and rulings, file the documents, petitions, appeals, evidence correctly in the court.  A lawyer attending a court hearing should be dressed accordingly and be well-versed with the courtroom rules. A lawyer also helps in negotiating deals and conditions in any agreement.

Not every lawyer is expected to go to the courtroom and argue the case. It entirely depends on the area of law chosen such as tax specialists who are least expected to be in the court. An advocate also has the option of working for the state in that case addressed as the government lawyer.
